Early signs of spring!

How can these images have been taken just days apart? Boston winters are beyond my understanding.

But we saw those little green tips today in the garden! They'll get buried again with white stuff, but it's nice to know they're there.

New Biscuit recipe

Goodness gracious! There must be a time for everything, but this past few weeks it's been time for rehearsals and rehearsals and homework and laundry. Not blogs. But it's mighty good to be back!

We went to the dentist's today, which means that we stayed over with my Mom. I adore our dentist back home and won't switch to one in Boston for the world! So we got breakfast at Mom's house -and a new biscuit recipe. It's worth checking out.

Biscuits

Preheat oven to 450 F.

Mix these together:
2 cups flour
4tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp salt

Now cut these into the dry ingredients
2TB butter
2TB shortening

Mix this into everything - just a bit. No need to overdo.
1C buttermilk

Cut and put in a pan, bake at 450 til golden.

Enjoy!

Paul

We got to see my great-uncle Paul a few weeks ago. He reminds me so much of my grandfather, who I lost several years ago. Paul is spunky and perceptive and witty and brave. His social life at his assisted living place is fuller than mine here in the city - he's a connection maker.

Time for Biscuits

My mom makes wonderful biscuits. She's got the touch. She knows the dough. And the rest of us haven't put in nearly as many biscuit baking hours as she and asked for a head start. Hence our kind neighbor Donna hosted a Biscuit Party! I recommend them - and I recommend this recipe!

The recipe we used is one of those well-loved family treasures that's covered in butter splatters and flour. Here it is with pictures. I'm sure I'll need some corrections - I'll get them from my mom.

1. Preheat your oven to 450 F.
2. First cut up 1 stick of butter into small pieces. The butter should be cold.

2. Set 2 packages of yeast to proof in 1/4 C warm water. Add a pinch of flour - it gives the yeast a little more energy.

3. Next measure out:

5 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 TBSN baking powder
2 tsp salt
2 1/2 tsp sugar

Pour the buttermilk in and stir.

Roll to 1/4 inch. Cut and fold in half. brush with butter.
Bake for about 10 minutes. Recipe fills 3 sheets.
Makes about 60 biscuits.
